A Room For Romeo Brass

Shane Meadows is among my favourite working filmmakers, I first encountered him on 'Dead Man's Shoes', and following that I was knocked out by 'This Is England', 'Somers Town' was not as breathtaking but a sweet little film in its own way, 'A Room For Romeo Brass' isn't quite up to scratch but you could certainly see that Meadows is on his way to perfecting the craft he displayed in the two films I spoke of above, the film falls short of his best work by uneven tone, as it moves between the darkness of 'Dead Man's Shoes' and the light heartedness of 'Somers Town' quite clumsily, Paddy Considine and the other Meadows regulars shine and their performances here point to why the diriector has recasted them since, if not his best film, certainly an impressive precursor to his later work.
