The Good, The Bad, The Weird
I love a good action and/or adventure film, and why not? I love the visceral thrill of them and that can be addictive, same reason I enjoy some horror films, admittedly common traits of clunky plotting, poorly thought out sequences and boring characters can turn me off many pictures, but there is no need to worry here, Ji-woon Kim’s ‘The Good, The Bad, The Weird’ is like a pure hit for visceral cinema junkies, a Korean western that again proves that that country still has a talent for genre cinema to keep an eye on (see: Oldboy, The Host, A Bittersweet Life, Memories of Murder, 3-Iron, 3…Extremes, Tale of Two Sisters, etc, etc, etc), the film is made all the more exciting by its apparent lack of CGI in the action sequences, a refreshing change of pace from American action pictures, there is a jaw dropping horse chase sequence that reportedly depended on real stunts and actual speed, outside of the body the film appeals in that Ji-woon clearly knows the genre and borrows from the best, from the ruthless attitude of Leone to the nihilistic undertones of Peckinpah, though don’t expect anything that compare to the mastery and depth of those two filmmakers, just expect to enjoy yourself.
