Happy-Go-Lucky
It has hard to create a leading character that you fall in love with for their good nature, Nick Park can do it using just claymation eyes for Gromit, Jean-Pierre Jeunet did it in Amelie but that was more thanks to the charm of Audrey Tautou, most of the time in cinema the characters you love are vile, selfish human beings, but Mike Leigh certainly does it in Happy-Go-Lucky, crafting the always smiling Poppy, in real life I find the constantly happy repulsive but it is to the skill of Leigh that I enjoy spending time with Poppy throughout this film, Leigh create counterpoints in his other characters to test whether Poppy is as attractive a personality as she should be, and it turns out that she should, there is also something reassuring to see the areas of London that I live in being inhabited by this type of person as well.
